Abstract Moroccan Berber Rugs disconcerted Prosper Ricard and other European amateurs, while captivating them to the highest degree. These were works from the plains surrounding Marrakech. The carpet merchants of this city attributed them to the Ouled Bessebaa (or Bou Seb’a) tribe, who lived in a territory located about sixty kilometers southwest of Marrakech. These knotted carpets seemed to respond to no concept “abstract design” . They presented, on a red background, mysterious patterns, apparently unrelated to each other. Often, even, any central point was lacking. There was therefore no central composition, no symmetry, no borders. The drawing was strange and raw, sometimes even wild. As early as the 1920s, writes Ricard, these carpets were sometimes imitated in cooperative and urban workshops, on the initiative of Europeans and with commercial intentions. After Ricard’s discovery, there was no more question for half a century of these strange knotted carpets. Until the exhibition dedicated to Moroccan textile art created in 1980 by the Textile Museum in Washington, they were not mentioned in any publication. The exhibition attributed a dozen textiles to the Ouled Bou Seb’a, but also to the Chiadma and Rehamna tribes. At that time, only a few collectors, especially Swiss and Americans, were interested in these works of art. Ethnologists or art historians considered them devoid of the slightest interest. It appeared in the meantime that the Ouled Besseba were not the only ones to know the spontaneous style: most of the tribes who weaved or knotted carpets were in this case. In Tunisia, the free style is found more in the production of kilims than in that of knotted rugs. Data are not yet available for Algeria, a country made inaccessible during the 1990s due to internal conflicts. The spontaneous style defies all norms used by both Eastern and Western cultures in the appreciation of rug design. Here, technical refinement and precision are generally out of place. The weaver does not attach importance to criteria such as the balance of the composition, the symmetry or the harmony of the colour. She uses the colors that are at her disposal or that she likes, and the materials that she finds at her fingertips, even if they are the remains of torn fabrics. The technical aspect of most of the pieces indicates that they were never made for sale. In one and the same rug, the warp threads can consist of completely different materials: wool of various colors, leftover industrial cotton, goat hair… The composition is born during the weaving process: there is no no pre-established scheme, no pattern.
